Vista/selective startup (msconfig command)

I have done a clean OS install on my new system and I want to take advtange of having a selective startup (as I did with XP).  There are 3 items that are checked in the startup tab:

1.)  Windows defender
2.)  Cyberlink PowerCinema (I'm assuming a product of MediaDirect)?
3.)  Microsoft Windows Operating System

A.)  I don't really understand what Windows Defender is, can anyone help me out here and if I need it checked or not?

B.)  I'm going to assume the Cyberlink PowerCinema is controling the MediaDirect feature?  If so, then I guess I need to leave that checked or else my MediaDirect button won't work, correct?

C.)  The Microsoft Windows Operating System item is kinda throwing me off, it wasn't there in XP.  Why is it there and do I need to leave it checked?

Thanks for any help!

Windows Defender is the Microsoft antispyware.
Power DVD
The Cyberlink Power Cinema doesn't control your Media direct button, so It's ok to take it out.
Microsoft Windows Operating System will depend. It could be the SideBar or the Welcomoe Center that pops up every time the computer is started

To disable defender if you wish, go to Start/all programs/Windows Defender

Open  WD and go to the "Tools" icon at the top, then select "Options", scroll down and uncheck the "Use Windows Defender" in the Admin Options section.

Defender is now off and you will not get any startup failure messages when you restart the system.

OK cool thanks guys!  BTW, do you recommend to use windows defender or is it junk?  Usually I use Ad-Aware, etc for spyware (although I don't have them running in the background cause I only use the free version).  Is it better to change now and just use Windows Defender or does it not work well?

Thanks.

BTW...is Windows Defender part of Microsoft's Live OneCare?  I know it comes with Vista (obviously) but does it also come with WD if you buy it?
