Visual C++ Runtime Library error
Help! I can't get my Dell Dimension 4500S desktop to load Windows XP. It boots up, shows the Windows XP logo, then I get an error window stating: Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library - Buffer Overrun Detected. Then it lists: Program:\??\C:\windows\system32\winlogin.exe The ironic thing is I had just done an AdAware scan yesterday, followed by a SuperAntispyware scan, which told me I needed to reboot my system after it removed a bunch of spyware, so I did and that's when this error started popping up. I don't have an antivirus boot disk, I use the CA antivirus software off the web. Also no backup! Do I have any hope? I'm no computer expert, if you can't tell! But any help would be appreciated!

Try doing a Windows XP "Repair" and that MAY get you going. If not, you will have to do a complete reinstall including reformatting the hard drive then (1) Install Windows (2) Install Intel chipset drivers (3) Install device drivers such as Sound, Video, etc.

Just adding to the helpful info already provided by fireberd
Could be scan deleted some essential file(s), if XP Repair doesn’t fix the problem – a long shot but:
If using different manufacturer Security type software products?
It can cause software conflicts that result in Visual C++ Runtime type errors
Work offline & try booting to Safe Mode to see if still receiving any errors
If no errors then either try disabling suspect security software or removing it, then boot to normal mode
But if you really think Malware is causing the problem, you have two options:
1. Create a new thread over in Malware Removal Forum here where subject experts can help
Before posting for help in the Malware Forum carefully read thread by Bugbatter this one
You need to download/install & use HJT (Hijack This) Installer to provide required Logs for your first post
2. Do a Windows XP Clean Install or if available use DSR utility (already suggested by fireberd)

thanks for the suggestions...unfortunately the XP repair didn't work. so I bought a new Compaq desktop tower, took the hard drive out of the old Dell and put it in as a second hard drive in the Compaq, booted the Compaq from the new hard drive, and then i was able to get into my old hard drive and get my data files off. In doing so, it found a Trojan virus in one of my data folders. I don't know if this caused all the problems, but I'm sure it didn't help. why my old virus software didn't pick it up is beyond me, it was CA free version with Road Runner, whereas the Compaq came with Norton and caught it right away. guess free doesn't pay? lol Ironic thing was my wife and i had the week off from work and were going to get all our data files off the Dell this past week, as it's 6 and 1/2 years old, so I knew I was probably on borrowed time with it.
