Websites shut down when I hit "Enter", "Submit" or "Send".

I am hoping that someone will be able to help me with a problem that I am having with my computer.  When I try to "send", "submit", or "enter" information on a website, the site I'm on completely shuts down.  I am able to send email however.  I have already taken off the spyware, cleaned off the cookies, defragmented and used the disc cleanup. Here are some examples of my problem.

Example #1:  In my email, I receive mail from Pillsbury.  In order to access the coupon section of their site, they require me to login using my email and password.  After entering these, I hit "submit" and the entire Pillsbury website and the email site both shut down and I need to re-login.  This happens with any company's website and not just Pillsbury.  Again, I am able to send email.

Example #2:  I go to a manufacturers website and they offer a free trial sample.  After I enter my name and address, I hit "send" and the site shuts down.

Example #3:  After supplying the data a company requires to enter a contest or sweepstakes, I press "enter" and their site shuts down.  Sometimes even the browser page shuts down and I need to re-login.

Example #4:  If I am on a site where there is a forum, or online help such as this one, I try to post a message and the site shuts down after I hit "submit".  I even had to go to a different computer to submit this request for help.

My PC Description is as follows:   Microsoft Windows XP   Home Edition Version 2002.                Service Pack 1.   Manufactured & Supporter By Dell.  Pentium 4CPU.   1.60 GHz
Integrated Sound   1.59 GHz    256 MB of RAM   Integrated Audio

If someone is kind enough to provide me with the information on how to fix this, I would surely appreciate having that information in very simple terms because I'm quite new at this computer thing.  In any case, I will greatly appreciate any help anyone can give me and am thankful for your time.

coconutgirl,

When you say that a Web site shuts down, do you mean that your Web browser is shutting down? Or do you mean that the whole computer is shutting down and restarting? In either case, what error messages reported? What Web browser are you using?

Is your anti-virus software up to date? Make sure it is, and scan the machine for viruses. Are all Windows Critical Updates installed on your system? What Operating System are you running? What model Dell computer do you have?

You should also scan your machine for spyware/malware using Ad-Aware and Spybot as described in this article.

Jim, thanks for your response.  In answer to your question:

a)  The site I'm on shuts down when I press "send", "submit", or "enter".  Also, the Web Browser shuts down.  The whole computer does not shut down.

b) There are no error messages that appear.

c) I use a combination of Web Browsers.  Most often I am on Internet Explorer and sometimes I am on MSN.  Both respond in the exact same way and both shut down when I'm visiting websites and press "send", "submit", or "enter" while I am logged into them.

d) My anti-virus software is Norton and it is up to date.  I scan for viruses frequently and none are found.

e) I tried to install the new Windows Service Pack 2 and it left my entire system inoperable.  I had to use System Restore to get it back.  All other Critical Updates are current.

f) The operating system I used is:  Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Version 5.1.2600,
Service Pack 1.0.  Dell Dimension 4300.  Intel Pentium 4CPU 1.60 GHz.

g) I believe that the Dell model I have is:  Dell Dimension 4300.  BIOS Version Dell Computer Corporation AO2.

h)  I have scanned my machine for spyware/malware using Lavasoft Ad  Aware and Spybot as well.  I will note that whenever I run Spybot, it discovers: DSO Exploit: 5 Entries, and Haxdoor H:  1 Entries.  I then select all of them and press " Fix Selected Problems".  Then it asks " You are about to remove these entries.  Do you want to continue"? I select " Yes".  This is when a box appears that is titled : "Spybot-Search & Destroy:  SpybotSD.exe-Bad Image".  The box then goes on to say " The application or DLL C:\WINDOWS\system32\klogini.dll is not a valid Windows image.  Please check this against your installation diskette."  I press OK and a box appears that states, " 6 problems fixed".  I am assuming it fixed all of the problems however; these items always appear when I run Spybot.  My updates on Spybot are current and I've even cleared off the first version I downloaded and started a new one with no change in results.

Again,  I appreciate any help you can give me.  I hope the information I'm giving helps to resolve this problem.

Thank you,  Coconut

coconutgirl,

Thanks for the additional information. Unfortunately, "klogini.dll" is evidence of the presence of a "backdoor trojan", according to this article by Computer Associates, this one by Sophos, and this one by Symantec.

According to the Sophos article, this trojan can disable antivirus scanners. Its purpose seems to be to steal passwords and collect keystrokes, which likely explains the association with secure Web sites. That makes its presence particularly dangerous, since passwords and other information being sent to secure sites may have been compromised.

Try removing it with one or two of the online virus scanners - TrendMicro's Housecall and Panda's "ActiveScan" are good ones to try. Here's a list of a number of companies that offer online virus scans that you may find helpful.

Needless to say, don't attempt to access any sites where you need to enter password or other personal information until the problem is resolved.
