XP cannot run on such an old machine. Reformat the drive and reinstall Win 95 if you want to use the old computer or throw away. Her friend shouldn't even have attempted to install XP. It's illegal to use another computer's operating system & it wouldn't be able to be activated even if it could be installed.

oldyeller,

If the disk is formatted with the NTFS file system you will need to FDISK and FORMAT before reinstalling Win95. If the FAT file system is still in use, a FORMAT will get rid of XP and allow installation of a more modest OS.

(Depending on the age of the machine and whether it is capable of running an OS more current that 95, throwing it away may be a very attractive option.)
