When files are missing.......

When files are missing or you start getting little problems with XP in your opinion what is the best "fix".  I have used  "sfc /scannow" & also the XP "Repair Reinstall".  Please let me know if there is another or better one than these.  Please note Dell had me reformatt my HD so the Dell Restore is gone.  Dell didn't inform me that what they were telling me to do would delete Dell Restore & that it was not recoverable.

Thank You & Happy New Year,
Fred

When system files are missing "sfc /scannow" or a Repair of XP are the best things to try and should replace them.

You do not say which files are missing or what the problems are.

It is quite common these days to receive a message like "Windows could not find.......(file name)" and it is actually caused by malware and is not a missing system file at all.

Post the names of the missing files or run scans and spyware detectors such as these below.
Online scans

Download and run this free program
Microsoft Windows Antispyware
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

Sometimes other tools are needed to clean up infections (if this is an infection), so post back if you need more help.
