Is there anything playing for you to hear?  (Sorry could not resist)

Have you checked the Device Manager to see if the sound card has been properly installed?

And the Device manager indicates it is installed correctly?  Is the Volume control set to Mute?

Nothing wrong with the sound acrd so the problem is between the jack and the sound card, possibly a loose connection.

You just posted that sound will come out of the speakers so its not the sound card.  Are any devices showing not installed wihin the Device Manager?

I too am having the same problem -- sounds works fine out of my speakers, but headphone jack is silent. I have Vista Ultimate on my Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop. I have been back and forth for 4 days now with Dell tech support and they keep telling me to install the latest drivers (below) which as you can see from the date are from 2005.

The Dell support folks don't know that this download is bogus, but they keep telling naive folks to try it. I basically have given up on Dell and contacted SigmaTel directly. If I hear back from them with some info on updated drivers, I will pass them along.

I have an Inspiron 9300 with Vista Ultimate. I'm having the same issue of no sound from the headphone jack after the Vista upgrade. I have downloaded and installed the latest sound drivers for Vista from the Dell support site and installed with no correction of the issue. Is there a solution as I haven't found one in these threads? If not, what gives Dell? Some of the posts about this issue date back to October 2006. It would seem like Dell would have resolved this before the release of Vista to the public.

Here's what I did to get the audio back to headphone jack on an Inspiron 9300 with a Vista Ultimate upgrade.

Went to My Computer/Manage. Opened the Communications driver (Sigmatel C-major audio). Chose the Driver tab then chose the Uninstall and uninstalled the audio driver. After completion of the uninstall I went to the Action menu of Computer Management. Choose scan for hardware changes. The Sigmatel C-major audio was reinstalled by Vista, but the headphone jack and speakers now work correctly.
