Win XP Can't Scan At Housecall - Java Required
Hi All!
I am running Win XP and have all critical updates installed. I had to reformat and re-install 2 weeks ago due to a virus that wiped out my Dell PC. I took it to a local shop and they extracted emails, some pics and of course, Win XP. I then had all MS updates installed.
I have AVG antivirus, Zone Alarm firewall, Ad Aware and all seems well. I went to to Trend Housecall (no affiliation) to do their combo virus, malware, and security scan to round things off.
I have used this many times before my re-installation of Win XP and critical updates and it would download the ActiveX controllers and worked like a charm.
Today, I can't get Trend to load and scan, I keep getting a box that my PC won't allow Java (or similar) and that I need to download latest Java Runtime Envoronment - with a link to Sun. Otherwise it just appears to keep running forever to download the controls it needs (I already have them in my browser, under settings>view objects) but it just won't work. I have gone into tools>internet options>advanced and checked all of the three entries under Java - Console Enabled - Logging checked - JIT compiler is also checked and it still won't work. They weren't checked before except for the compiler (which didn't work either) but I checked and tried, checked and tried again.
What can I do next or uncheck or check or dowload to be able to use Trend Housecall again?
Sorry for the long post - I hoped to eliminate re-posting details.
Thank you very much !

Hi:
It seems that Trendmicro Housecall has changed, and now requires Sun's Java Runtime Environment (JRE) rather than Microsoft's VM. You should download the latest version of JRE from the link Housecall gave you. Once you have installed it, go back into Tools>Internet Options>Advanced, and check the box next to Use JRE 1.5.0_06 under Java(Sun), and uncheck all the boxes under Microsoft VM. Close and restart your browser. Housecall should work then.

You need to download and install Java runtime -

Thanks so much for your advice. I'll do this when I get up in the A.M.
Last quick questions:
Will MS Virtual Machine stay unchecked after the House-Call scan and the new Java Environment from Sun take it's place (for whatever it does - things related to java)?
Or, will I then check anything back "on" in the old Virtual Machine, and/or do anything with the Sun download (such as delete it and redownload it when I need to use Trend in the future)?
How should things be configured in my browser (regarding MS Virtual Machine and/or Sun) after the download and scan of my PC? Do they coexist?
Thank you very much!
