bigpink,

Go to Start|Control Panel|Administrative Tools|Event Viewer|System. See if there is anything there marked with yellow or red which will flag an error. That may indicate what is causing the interruption in your startup. You can right-click any of those items and choose "Properties" to get an explanation of what the error indicates.

You should always do clean installs, a dirty over install should only be done to recove data before afresh clean install.

I just had a similar problem with my Inspiron/5100.  It would go so far as the startup screen then it seemed as though it would hang.  What I found out was this.  My video driver had dropped off for some reason.  The laptop was working fine, I just couldn't see what was happening.  From what you discribed, the problem could be this.

Another way of detecting the problem is this.  While booting, press one of the F keys.  I'm not sure which one.  either F4, F6, or F8. That will take you into a section that will allow you to boot into Satemode.  Once your there, you can go into the "Control Panel", then click the "System icon".  Look to see if there is a driver that is out of place by showing an exclamation point.

The last thing you want to do is to re-install but I had to do it myself.  You can boot into your Windows XP CD and do a complete re-install.  As long as your doing your re-install over the existing program, you will not lose anything.  If you decide to do this, and you have never done it, ask before you start.  Its relatively simple, but its better to know exaclty what to look for, and what to do, than to guess.

I was having the same problem myself. I have a dell inspiron 8200. Worked fine the previous day, when i booted up the next day it gave me the exact problem the guy said above. To cure it i had to restart in safe mode and then perform a system restore....any ideas why this happened?
