Win XP HP Printer Update - 0x80070002 error ?

I am unable to complete the following Windows XP update installation (Dimension 8300) - with installation failure error 0x80070002 - which could be due to an interrupted download (the Postscript PS update worked fine):

 

Hewlett-Packard Company - Printers - HP Color LaserJet 4650 PCL 6 [= 10 Mb]
Date last published: 9/9/2005
HP printer software update released on August 02 2005.

 

The attempted remedies have been:

 

1) Remove contents of the DataStore folder in %windir%\SoftwareDistribution - didn't work; also appears to lose my Windows Update installation history

 

2) Windows Installer Cleanup Utility (msicuu2.exe) - abandoned as too risky/time consuming: "Continuing further will make permanent changes to your system. You may need to reinstall some or all applications on your system that used the Windows Installer Technology to be installed" [lists 42 applications !]

 

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
