When your computer came, it came with an installed operating system. Dell puts the product key in the memory on the motherboard, so no product key is needed. You just need to use the Dell OEM Disks that Dell sent with your computer. The product key on the newer laptops is under the battery compartment.
If your computer came with Vista and you got an upgrade disk fro Dell, then the upgrade disk has a Product Key on the sleve that the disk came with. This Product Key will be needed to be entered in order for Windows 7 to get fully activated.
