The unit didn't come with any software, when I bought it I knew it was compatible with win98se and up with no additional drivers, so I kind of expected that it wouldn't be compatible with win98fe.
The mfg's. web site is in Chinese???, so much for that.
How can I tell if full chipset drivers are installed? I've had no problems with any other peripherals, (of course everything I've installed in the past was win98fe compatible or came with drivers).
There are numerous references within the forum for problems related to USB pen hard drives, which do need additional drivers for win 98. These give URL for other web sites providing USB drivers
Thank you very much for your help. I'll try them all.
One other thing I forgot to mention, on the machines that have win98fe I installed different hard drives and set-up with win me and systems would recognize usb hard drive. I just like win98, (ain't that crazy).

Hi,
A number of USB devices such as USB pen hard drives need additional or new drivers to run with Win 98 FE or SE.
Did the unit come with any software
Check out the manufactuers web site for the external drive you have.
Do you have the full chipset drivers installed on your Win 98 systems.
Have you tried front / rear USB ports
Is the device separately powered from its own power source or is it powered by the USB cable.
An older machine may not have enough power on the USB bus to drive the unit if it is powered from the USB cable, solution is a powered USB hub.

I've tried self/external power, etc.

Hi

Look through items on this search result.

This site
http://support.wdc.com/download/
has additional drivers for Western Digital External hard disks
This site may help. I have generic user log in details for this which I have sent you by PM
