Winddows XP Pro firewall
I have Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop with XP Pro on it. It is not networked but I connect as dial-up to the Internet with AOL. I thought that XP firewall could be set up and used but I have not figured out how. If I go to Network Connections, double-click the dial-up icon and Change The Settings of This Connection, that is as far as I can go. There is nothing to change after that. It does show in Details --Disconnected, Shared, Firewalled.
Since I couId not figure XP firewall out, I downloaded the free Sygate Personal Firewall and tested it and I am glad I did. I got this last night.
04/01/2004 20:44:28 Denial of Service Major Incoming TCP 208.191.1.1 01-00-20-00-01-00 172.165.153.12 00-00-01-00-00-00
What is the XP Pro firewall good for?
Thanks for information!

You need to either right click on the connection you wish to enable the firewall for, and then select Properties (then go to the Advanced tab), or, like the directions in Help and Support specify, click it once, and use the left panel link under Network Tasks to "change settings of this connection," not double click it. As for the message you got, that's common, and happens hundreds and hundreds of times a minute, all over the place. The nice thing about XP's firewall is that you don't have to be annoyed by announcements of these pings every other second.
"What is the XP Pro firewall good for?"
It's free, it's easy to set up (if one reads the directions), and it does exactly what it's supposed to do with a minimum of fanfare and hoopla.

Right click does not help! Click it once does not help. I try to go to Properties tab and look at the options but nothing happens if I click the Properties tab. Maybe there are permissions within Windows XP that need to be set in order that I can do this?

Are you running as an Administrator, or as a Limited User? If Limited User, you need to log on as an Administrator to change these options, but you should be getting a prompt to that effect at some point. Unless someone has set specific restrictions for your account (or for the Network Connections options), you should be able to change the settings when logged on as an Administrator.
Was the connection showing as being Firewalled prior to the installation of Sygate? If so, the Windows firewall was apparently already enabled. Then again, I just noticed that you connect via AOL, so I guess anything's possible as far as something being hosed as a result of that goes, which is why I don't recommend AOL as a service provider.
You should be seeing something similar to the images below (although I have my Control Panel and associated functions switched to Classic View).
