Was the system model on the Windows 10 approved list? As of 2010, Dell no longer ships the OS CD. Dell provided software on the system you were to use to make the OS back up recovery CD. Because you did not do this, we are required to charge you if the originally purchased warranty has expired. If the warranty was still valid, you could use the form here. Or you could use this 3rd party vendor to purchase the OS CD.
I had no idea at the time, the prompt came up to install so I started. When it hung on a black screen, I tried rebooting one too many times which corrupted the system. I then ran the Windows 10 install from USB not realizing I'd lose everything on the machine as well as the ability to upgrade. Microsoft wont even honor the Product Code to activate Windows 10 - crazy!
