navigate to the following key
HKEY_USER\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop In the
right pane there are entries and one of them is AutoEndTasks [if it is not there then right click in this right pane, new--String value and give it the name AutoEndTasks:I believe these are case sensitive]
Double click this and set it to 1
navigate to the following key
HKEY_USER\{YourSID}\Control Panel\Desktop and do the same
YourSID is the folder below the .Default folder that start with S-1-{Numbers} and you want the one that does not end in _Classes and if you have multiple users you have to choose the right one.
navigate to the following key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon In the
right pane there should be an entry that says
PowerDownAfterShutdown set its value to 1, and if this entry does not exist then add it by choosing string type entry.
I get the same problem on my latitude c610 with Windows 2000. I have tried a few things but can't fix it. Help on this problem would be greatly appreciated.

That key is the same has HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop
