Windows 2000 (SP3) will not boot after installation

I am trying to install W2K on an older Dell System, a GX1. I put in a different hard drive, a Samsung drive, which I downloaded the driver for. After installing that driver, which prepared the drive for W2K, I installed Windows. After setup, the loading sequence completes, but the systems just stops at the Windows splash screen. The same thing happens when I try to boot into safe mode. Any suggestions (other than getting a new hard drive)?

Hi Calvin,

I have come across this problem a couple of times too (on older computers). What I found out was that the BIOS on the older system did not support W2K, specifically ACPI. On one system I was able to flash the BIOS and was able to complete the upgrade. On the other there was nothing that could be done so we ended up putting W98 on again. One word of caution, be very careful if you are going to attempt to flash the BIOS and recognize the fact that you could render your motherboard unusable if the flash does not work.

Good Luck,

Greg

Greg:

Thanks for your message. I did flash the BIOS on the computer, though it turns out that the BIOS on it was already the latest. Luckily, the motherboard was not affected. I at first turned off ACPI, then turned it back on. Nothing seems to work, so I think what I will need to do is get another hard drive. And then pray that the newer hard drive works with the present motherboard. Oy.

Anyway, thanks again for your help.

Calvin
