Thank you for contacting the Dell Community Forum. Couple of questions for you: At what point did you get the "device driver required" message? During OS setup or afterward? And when you say the media card reader icons are not showing in Windows, do you mean you see no drive icon in My Computer when you insert a memory card in the reader?
on trying to install clean windows 7 64 bit after setup screen appears for language and keyboard next screen is setup which stops asking for "a required cd/dvd drive device driver missing"
you get option to browse for driver .
media card icons when you open my compter screen on desktop showing c :drive dvd drive and any other external drives attached
on inserting a sd memory card the icon appears and disappears when removing sd card
If I understand you correctly, this is what's happening: When you first check My Computer, no icon for the card reader is listed, but once you insert a memory card in the reader, the icon appears. After you remove the card from the reader, the icon disappears. Is that accurate?
As for the "CD/DVD device driver missing" error when trying to install Windows 7 64-bit, I'm seeing reports of other users experiencing this behavior. Most of them were able to resolve it by downloading an updated storage controller driver and pointing to that driver when prompted. You may want to extract the driver available here to a USB flash drive and try using that driver if you attempt to install 7 64-bit again.
I wasn't able to find any drivers for the card reader (for Vista or Windows 7) when I searched earlier today. The behavior I think you described (where the icon for the card reader isn't displayed until you insert a memory card) has been reported by other users (see examples here and here) and appears to be related to a change in the way the OS handles those devices. If you're not able to read memory cards at all, please let me know.
