I'm running Windows 7 Release Candidate on my Inspiron 9300 laptop. It runs pretty well, even with Aero turned on. Specs include: Pentium M 1.73 CPU, 1 GB RAM, ATI Radeon Mobile X300 (128 MB).
Thank you all for your response. I have already run the Upgrade Advisor. It fails. But the reason behind posting here was to see if someone has pushed the limits specified by Microsoft or the Upgrade Advisor and acheived favorable results. Anybody?
@e.pierce: You are correct, It does ask me to add more ram and upgrade the video card.
No I will not be using this as a production machine. This is an old laptop that I use as a backup to my main computer. It's nothing really important. I just wanted to install Windows 7 on it.
I posted here to check if someone had done it. I didn't want to install it and find out that the experience will be sluggish and then roll back to XP. Just too much of an effort. Was hoping to see if someone had an actual experience with the upgrade.
I believe you need a 128 mb video card and 2gb of RAM. You can upgrade the RAM to 2GB but your video card has been maxed out already at 64mb. Maybe someone who has actually installed onto a 5100 can give us a heads up on it. I too would like to know.

Run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor to get an idea of possible issues: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/upgrade-advisor.aspx

what problems does the upgrade advisor report? (you probably need more RAM and a better video card?)
do you want to run the system in production, or are you just testing to see if Win7RC will install?
if you want to run production, what will be used?

I tried the Windows 7 Upgrade Adviser, on my Inspiron 6000, and though most of my computer passed, some components did not.
Likes everything else, even the wired NIC adapter.
So... you might want to run the adviser first.
