Windows 7: Program Files vs Program Files (x86)
I just got a new Dell XPS Studio 8100 with Windows 7 Home. When I install my programs (which had previously run on Windows XP), the default folder for installation appears to be Program Files (x86). Both folders, Program Files and Program Files (x86) exist. Do I accept the (x86) folder? In general, how should I decide which folder to use for the installation---does it matter?
I've imported a lot of my previous settings and I'm wondering if having paths with Program Files\... will screw things up if all the installs go into Program Files (x86).
Thanks for any advice.

When running a 64-bit version of Windows, it can install and run 32-bit programs too. 64-bit programs are installed in the Program Files folder and 32-bit (x86)programs are installed in the Program Files (x86) folder. The installer will decide which to put it in - don't change it.

They have been used interchangeably for twenty years, but it is a term originating from the family of Intel processors (386, 486, etc.) with 32-bit capabilities.

Thanks. And why didn't Microsoft call the folder Program Files (32bit) ?
