My studio laptot has come with a windows7 HP serial tag. But for some reason the tag has become irreadable. How can I retrive the windows serial number from within the current instalation -offline or online- so that in case of damage to the OEM partition I can reinstall the windows?

Key finders will not work since Dell used an image to install and a generic key to activate. The generic key will show up for a factory installed system. If the computer came with the operating system disk, the 25 character key will be on the packaging.

Just know that the key that the keyfinder will retreive will not be the same as what was on the sticker ... it will be a generic key used for Dell factory installs. This should not, however, be a problem.

Google for a freeware program called KeyFinder or something like that

Also, if the need should arise to reinstall the OS, you should have a PC Restore option that will restore your PC to factory condition. This will eliminate any need for the key as well.

It is a problem. I've tried it and it doesn't work. It has to be the unique key for his computer. It's part of the anti piracy protection. It does work when the OS is user installed from a retail disk. The key finders reveal the code that was entered when windows was activated. That cannot be used to reinstall a factory installation of windows.

Since the PC came with Windows 7, it should still be in the 1 year warranty. Contact Dell about getting a replacement copy of Windows 7 and a new Product Key, if they cannot provide the original product key.
Are you looking at the actual product key? In many Dell laptops, that tag is in the battery compartment.
