Windows 7 upgrade

I bought a Studio XPS (M1340) on July 27, delivered on July 30, from the Dell Outlet. When I attempt to register for the Windows 7 upgrade, I get  a message my system is not eligible. I'm guessing that based on the Service tag, the system is recognizing the original purchase date (it is a refurb), not MY purchase date.

Any advise?

Check the requirements for the free upgrade. Your model must be on the eligible list but the M1340 is not on the list.  The list is Here.

Sorry,  Mary, but after looking around a bit  it appears the XPS 13 and the M1340 are the same model.   In the Outlet it's listed as  "Studio 13 - 1340".

It's probably just too early for the tag to be registered in Dell's Windows 7 upgrade system yet.    I'd give it a few days and try again.

If you go here http://www.dell.com/content/topics/topic.aspx/global/products/landing/en/us/windows-7-consumer?c=us&l=en&s=dhs

the studio XPS 13 is listed as eligible. When I try to register, it is in the pull down menus. It is only after I hit submit, I get the ineligible message.

It can take 3-5 business days to have the info show up in your Dell account. Keep trying

Wow, I'm relieved, (in a way), to discover I have lots of company. I find that CNET has an article about the Upgrade program mess, Best Buy has a page addressing the issue and lots of folks here are posting about the use of the ship date to the retailer to establish eligibility for this program. I have been going 'round and 'round with tech support, (no help there), and customer service. Today, August 2nd, I spent two hours on the phone, finally spoke to some Indian citizen who said his name was S***** C*****  and claimed to be the Customer Service Senior Honcho. He said it was beyond his power to help me.  None of the Dell people know anything about a resolution to this issue. They all assert the "purchase date" is the ship date, Jan 30, 2009 in my case. Of course, I bought the system in the middle of July. Can't get that into their consciousness though.

Ol' S*****  says someone will contact me Monday, August 3rd. I look forward to the congent reply I am sure awaits, and will post the results.

I am amazed that with all the flap this has caused on the internet, that Dell support personnel are still oblivious. That, and the Eligibllity website remains with it's misinformation intact. I mean, if it is truly Dell's intent to require purchase of a system directly from the company between June 26 and December 2009, why not take the time to say so. Currently there is no mention of it. One learns of this hidden "clause" by calling CustomerCare and speaking to a senior manager.

Let us not forget that Dell finds it in their interest to end warranty support, (standard and extended) on the ship date also. This amounts to six months of coverage in my case.

I did register etc, didn't solve the problem for me yet. I contacted tech support to get McAfee AV scraped off my system the evening following purchase, during that telephone and internet chat ordeal, (two hours), it was revealed to Dell personnel that I had just bought the system.                     Good Grief!

vhinze:

You need to follow the proper procedure for registering the product from the store to yourself. Directions were included in the box....

In case you no longer have that, go to the web site below and complete the registration process. Wait a few days, then try the Windows 7 upgrade.

Many people who purchased a Dell in a retail store have been able to acheive success with the Windows 7 upgrade program.

l, too had the same "not eligible" when I tried to register my Studio 1355 for the upgrade.  My purchase date was June 29 and everything I had read idicated my system was eligible.  I sent an email to Dell customer support and recei ved a reply withing 24 hours.  I was told to try again in 5 days.  After the 5th day I again received the same "not eligibe message".  I replied to the previous email and was told my problem had been moved up in the support network and to try again in 24 hours.  The next day, I again filled out the registration application and this time it was accepted.  As far as I'm concerned Dell support did what was neccessary to get me registered for the Windows 7 upgrade.

Excellent Advice!

This also applies to systems gotten directly form Dell or from the Outlet. It can take 3-5 business days(or more this is the average) for the Dell system to process the service tag entry.

Yes Sir,

you guessed correctly.  Now get a load of this.

And email "Customer Service".

I ended up sending an e-mail to the customer service at the support site and they told me they would fix it. I waited a couple days and sure enough, they had. I am now registered. If you have done everything you were supposed to do, then e-mail them.
