Windows 8.1 keeps asking for key code. :-(
Cannot do recovery for Windows 8.1 keeps asking for key code. My 3yo grandson jammed 2 disc into optical drive of my X51 R2 and disc stuck inside. Took to Geek Squad (never again). They repaired optical drive after shipping it to another state for repair. But when it was returned the Windows 8.1 OS was wiped out. Not only that but they ruined my video card. I bought another video card but now the 8.1 OS keeps asking for a key code so now I am not able to recover Windows 8.1. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Rico

Sounds like you are trying to install the wrong Edition of Windows 8.1...
Proceed with a Clean Installation of Windows 10 TH2, try the Windows 10 .iso and then the Windows 10 Home Single Language .iso if prompted for a key:

I've been reading posts regarding the DELL XPS 10, Windows 8.1 RT FAILURE. It seems that my problem is like many others, way back to 2013. Since DELL did not send me a product key for either WIN 8.0 or MS Office (they say they are embedded on the motherboard), nor did they recommend I make a mirror upon receipt, I am unable to REACTIVATE my WIN 8.1RT. It will not allow me to install any software or run MS Office. It seems there are no solutions. I have spent over ten hours on the phone with both Microsoft and Dell. Microsoft tells me that Dell receives a volume license for all of Dell computers, and that Dell has a record of each computer product key used. Dell representatives tell me they don't keep records. A LOT OF FINGER POINTING but NO SOLUTIONS. I had a registered Dell XPS10, and it worked fine for two years. One day the operating system stopped working properly. I did a factory reset about five times with no success. Dell's only solution was to send them $279 for a new motherboard or send it back to the factory for the same amount. The tablet didn't cost that much!!!! How could I reinstall a motherboard on a tablet anyway?????
I am tired of someone with an Indian accent literally YELLING (he claimed to be with CORPORATE) at me and telling me they can do nothing. I think Microsoft ought to bring a lawsuit against Dell for misusing their Microsoft volume licenses due to poor record keeping.
I have the product ID and am registered with Dell. Dell did not provide me with product keys with the computer. Three computer experts in my large town have told me never to buy Dell and that only Dell could help me. Even the Dell contractor who came out and repaired my XPS 12 told me to buy a Toshiba or a HP next time.
I WILL NEVER BUY A DELL AGAIN unless my XPS 10 can get fixed. ALL I NEED IS MY WINDOWS 8.1 RT (build 9600) key so my computer will work again!
