Windows 8.1 Personalization and Lock screen

Windows 8.1 offers options to turn your PC or tablet into a picture frame by making the Lock screen a slide show of pictures - either locally on the device or photos from the cloud in SkyDrive. Windows 8.1 also has the ability to take pictures with the built-in camera right from the Lock screen without having to log in.

To change or add pictures to the lock screen, follow these steps:

  1. From the Start Screen, access the Settings Charm and select Change PC Settings.
  2. In the PC Settings window, choose PC & devices, click on Lock Screen.

  3. Navigate to the Slide Show option on the right side of the screen and move the slider to enable the Slide Show.

  4. Choose appropriate settings and the lock screen will now display a slide show of the pictures.

The user can also choose to change the color theme and the background on the Start Screen. These settings can be accessed from the Personalize option under the Settings Charm.

The Taskbar and Navigation Properties window allows the user to change a number of settings and personalise their Windows 8.1. The settings a user can change are:

  • Enable/Disable Charms menu.
  • Enable/Disable Switch Apps list.
  • Replace Windows PowerShell with Command Prompt in the Win + X menu or in the menu when a user right clicks on the Start Button.
  • Boot to Desktop, instead on Start Screen.
  • Use the Desktop Wallpaper as the Start Screen background.
  • Manage the Start Screen pop up while using multiple displays.
  • Change the Apps view on Start Screen.

To access the Taskbar and Navigation Properties window:

  • Right click on the Taskbar from the Desktop mode and select Properties.
