windows 98 and usb

I have a machine that is about 5 yrs. old. I noticed it had two usb ports in the back. When I inserted the data stick (and it lit up), I then went to My Computer to read the contents and transfer a file. I discovered that this drive was not recognized by the system. It also has a cd-rom drive and a 31/2 drive besides the c drive itself. Why would this be? Is there some way I have to configure my machine differently or something I must do to be able to read this portable drive?

The correct board to be on and post your question is linked below.  Someone there might be able to help.  You are on the new Vista Operating System Board and you have Windows 98.  Good luck

Quite a few flash drives will require specific drivers for Win98. You will want to check with the manufacturer of the drive to see if it is supported.
