Dell Technical Support is now directing customers to turn off automatic updates and NEVER install automatic updates.  My XPS M1730 running XP Pro SP3 crashed.  While reinstalling drivers, etc., using the GotoAssist application, the Dell technician turned off all automatic update functions and notifications and even edited a registry.  I questioned him about this because I have never been told to turn off updates.  I'm not a computer person and have no basis for judging what updates are important and which are not.  I have always relied on automatic updates to protect my system.  The technician said that the updates mess up the drivers and make the system unstable.  I spoke to three other techs in the course of restoring this system and they all said the same thing.  NEVER install windows updates.

The updates are from Microsoft for the Windows Operating System. If they feel an update is critical or recommended then I think it would be foolish not to install it. After all they are the ones who have designed the system and would hopefully know better than anyone else how full of holes it was and probably still is.  I have been around these forums for years and I have never heard of some Dell call center phone "tech" saying to not install them.  This is just wouldn't make sense. The next thing you know they will be telling you to never update your security software programs for this or some other obscure reason. All I can say is that I have always installed these updates ever since I have had computers and been online and have never had a "messed up" driver or an unstable system that I have been aware of.

Several of the other people responding in this thread have quite a bit of longevity on these forums and had years of answering questions, and I certainly would value their advice much more than a faceless Dell employee who calls themselves a techie. If they were MS engineers or programmers, then it would be another matter. When I worked for a satellite TV company several years ago I took tech calls after a short training periond, so offiicialy I was a tech...even though I didn't know what I was doing half the time. Its your system...do with it what you will.
