This one is a head scratcher. If you search this site you will find other posts with this same problem. I do not believe there has been a solution yet. There seems to be an indication though that it is a program or update issue caused by recently installed software.
A google search reveals that the link earlier mentioned by Denny has been updated. The link at http://www.computing.net/windows2000/wwwboard/forum/53645.html may provide solutions. In short this may be a trojan involving a folder or file called "winshow" A program named hijack may do the trick as well as manual deletions if the occurence is found.

Hi, as some of you may have seen in another post, I have had this problem for a while. Initially, I suspected that one of the application programs I installed had caused the problem. However, by following this forum and by making comparison with other users and their running applications, it appeared less and less likely ...
That's why I followed the link to the computing.net/forums above and especially the post #18 (by "moblocks") which seemed to have been successful for several users. I found "winshow" folders and files in both my user account in one other user's account. Before deleting them, I followed the "recipe" by "moblocks". (I also removed the entries related to "searchv.com" while inside the "Hijack This" program; I remember that I had problems about 1 month ago with the home page in IE being redirected to the "searchv.com" regardless of what my home page was set to.)
I did not have any files or folders or registry entries related to "winlink" and "msupdater.exe" that was mentioned. As you may know, it takes a while to see if this indeed removed the trojan since the problem on my WXP Prof. machine only happened about 1 in 5 to 10 logins.
Thanks to joat77 for the link and for guiding me in (hopefully) the right direction. I'll give more feedback in a couple of days to confirm that this remedied the problem.
Cheers, Roger.

Spybot S&D
Ad-Aware
Cwshredder
With all of these download them, install (after unzip if required), download the latest signature file, run, delete all that they find.
Failing those solving your problems a post of a hijackthis log for the experts to advise.
HijackThis From Here
Download, run, scan, save log, then in notepad copy the FULL log by copy and paste to a post in one of these specialist spyware removal forums:-
http://tomcoyote.org/forums/index.php
http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php
http://www.net-integration.net/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi
http://boards.cexx.org/index.php
DO NOT FIX ANYTHING WITH HIJACKTHIS WITHOUT EXPERT ADVICE, most of what it finds you need for normal MS Windows tasks.
Do read the sites FAQ before posting, and advise your problem and what steps you have already done to try to cure your problem.
I am in all those sites as ChrisRLG. You might get me, but any of the more problematic ones are handled by the experts. If you get a 'advanced member' like me, we have other ways of asking for advice from the experts, to pass on to you.
You could post your log here in this thread (if in the Virus Information and Removal Board - if not post in that board not in this thread), and I will have a go at giving advice, but if you go to one of the more specalist forums more experts will be able to help.

Just an update ... it did it ... I haven't had the problem for about 1 week now. I used recipe given by "moblocks" in the link above. Thanks for the link ... without it would be very difficult to track down.
Cheers, Roger.

All I have to Say is "Spybot-Search and Destroy"( as the above post says, too)..I ran it, and haven't had a problem since. And it finds the registry entry, too..all you have to do is run it..and it's free, of course!
I just bought my Dell 3 weeks ago...and believe me..I was frustrated about this error!!

That's the reference I used and it worked fine as I reported earlier. (As you can read above too in another post, the Spybot program seems to work too ... ).
Cheers, Roger.
