Windows config files missing......
Hopefully someone can help me.....
after successfully booting up earlier today, i had a few issues with virus's and my system shut it's self down.....
upon restarting i have been unable to boot up windows..... I get the following issue
"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt
C:\windows\system32\config\system"
I am running Windows XP on a Dimension 8400 but don't have a installtion disk (It came preinstalled on my PC and believe it held in a partition)
My question is.... how can i repair the error without losing all my files help on my PC? If that is not possible, is there anyway to transfer my files somewhere else while i reformat HDD and reinstall the OS?
Really hoping someone can help

Before you try a repair, remove the drive, mount it in a 3.5" external drive case and attach it to a working system to make a backup of your files.
Then return the drive to the system, press F12 at powerup, load the Dell diagnostics, and run the EXTENDED (NOT just the quick) hard drive test. If the drive passes all tests, you will need the Windows CD as noted to try a repair.
More likely the drive will fail the test - i.e., bad sectors have developed - and if so, you'll need a new hard drive.

You need to order replacement disks from Dell. Fill out the form Here. You need the windows reinstall disk to boot to to do a repair.

You'll need a Windows CD, a CD or flash drive with the drivers, and a new hard drive of the same type as the existing one - it's impossible to be more specific without knowing what model system you've got.

i have a dell mini. i booted up my pc the other nite to find the windows missing or corrupt system 32 file. it says to either put in the cd and go from there or press "R" to repair. i have to press "R" due to the fact that the dell mini does not have a cd drive. i have even tried to plug in the jump drive that came with the pc when i ordered it and still nothing. any help would be greatly appreciated.
