I seem to have hit on something. I shutoff windows auto update, and unchecked the box to get updates from microsoft for other products, and put windows defender as an exception in windows fire wall, then checked for updates.   It seems to have worked.  Now all I have to do is figure out, what of the three corrected the problem, because I did them all at once.   Thanks again for all the help/   Don

My guess is was the Firewall but this would be the first time that I did not see the Windows Firewall autoconfigure for a Microsoft product.

By the way windows update also showed 3 optional updates for the monitor and video card that never showed before.  Haven't had a chance to sort out which one was causing the problem yet. My guess would be , maybe windows update didn't work as long as it was checking microsoft's updates.  Thanks Don

Get your hardware drivers from the manufcaturer,  not from Microsoft.  Monitor drivers are usually not nescessary unless you have at least a 20" monitor.

Thank you, Don, for your persistence.  I have seen your posting on the web I think and here as well.  I had the same error message on my brand new Dell Inspiron 1501.

I did the exact things you did, but also opened my other firewall and allowed Windows Defender there.  I had to search for the program, then right click and add it to my desktop so I could find it in the Firewall exception search.  Then, I was finally able to get Windows Defender updated. :womanvery-happy:

I think it is a Firewall issue that is related to Windows Defender Update Definition Version 1.0.0.0 created on 7/13/07 @ 1:49.

Glad it works, I only had windows firewall . I'd think having 2 firewall wouldn't work to good:smileyhappy:, I might be wrong.  Like the right hand not knowing what the left hand was doing...

I am having same problem updating defender. I get error code 0X80240029. I have enabled Defender in the firewall exceptions and have also tried updating to "newer/latest" version from MS website. It wont let me install as i have the latest copy.

All this on a brand new Inspiron 6400 with vista home premium that is only a week old. I've wasted so much time trying to find a way to contact Dell direct (without resorting to extortionate phone support) but cannot find one.

Can anyone tell me how to fix this problem or how to get email support from Dell in the UK?

Lucky you!......Thanks for taking the time to reply but that hasn't worked for me. I forgot to mention that I'd already turned of auto update etc.

Nothing seems to cure it......Is there any way to contact Dell support (without it costing). Vista itself updates, just not defender.

Not that I know off.  I went through all that last week. Dell only wants to hear from us for hardware problems, nothing that came installed on your machine. By the way, I didn't ask for all the trial offers that they loaded and want you to buy. They must have a good deal with the company's. Sorry

I receive the same error message when attempting to update. I tried the steps mentioned in previous posts w/ no luck...any other ideas?

I have an E520 w/ Vista Home Premium (through express upgrade).
