Windows doesn't recognize LAN

Question

I recently reinstalled windows on my dell dimension 8400. Before i installed i could easily access the internet. Now when i click on my internet button, it doesnt work because windows xp does not recognize my LAN connection. Please help.

After the Windows reinstall did you install the chipset driver, video, network, audio, etc. drivers?  The network driver controls the ethernet port in your computer, presuming that's how you access the internet.

If you got a resource disc with the computer they should be there. Or on the Left side of this

page Dell Support Tools> Drivers and Downloads

Install Chipset drivers FIRST then video, network, sound,

i bought the computer off ebay. It did not come with a resource disk. Can i download it somewhere or buy a resource disk?

First, see this:

Download the drivers to your mother's computer, then burn them to a CD or use a flash drive. Transfer to your computer and install each file.

Using the above referenced Belarc advisor you may be able to tell. Same with network driver, as there are two gigabit drivers listed, and you may have to try both.
