Windows Error Message

I have a Dell Dimension 4400, Windows XP with SP2. When I reboot sometimes I get the Windows Error message: General Protection Fault Error. Please delete file. Can anyone explain what this means? Thanks.

The first thing to do is an online virus scan. Go here and check 'auto clean'.

If you come up clean, then post that back in your reply.

I did a virus scan, ran Adaware SE and ran Spybot S&D. All came up clean.

As stated previously, don't trust your own AV program. Use the link to the best online scanner for most users. Allow the download.

If you have done this and you come up clean use this command to get to the (Programs) Startup tab.

msconfig

(Be offline when you do this) Make a list of all the names with checks in their boxes. Uncheck all the checked boxes, Apply and OK. Restart your system.

On restart, do you still get the message ? If no, then add (just) 1 of the previously checked boxes. Apply, OK. Restart.

If no message on restart, add another of the startups from your list. Continue to do this process with all the listed items until you get the error message. Let us know if any added startup appears to cause the error message.

I have posted a message on the SP2 board. According to Dell Technical my problem is caused by SP2. Dell is replacing my Hard Drive. Thanks for the help.
