Windows Error Recovery Screen...Repair Instructions/Options?
I have a Inspiron 1520 Vista HP 32 bit, sp2. My question is, if I put the "windows installation disc that came with my laptop in, and then restart my computer, like the recovery screen suggest, will i lose my data? the disc that I have is titled "Reinstallation DVD Windows Vista Home Premium 32BIT" Dell's OS P/N NX589.

Windows Error Recovery (Black/White Screen)
Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
1. Insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer.
2. Choose your language settings, and then click "next"
3. Click "repair your computer"
Below this I am offered safe mode options, but they just loop me back to this screen. I have run and passed all hardware diagnostics. Is there some link that gives instructions and options for this issue?

Repair does not not change any of your personal files. It just installs windows "over" your previous install and replaces any damaged system files. It might correct your errors--or not. It's worth trying. Did you try this--Have you tried rebooting the computer a couple of times to see if the same error message comes up? Did you install anything new recently? Can you get into Safe Mode to check Hardware Device Manager?
If you try the Repair, you need to select Boot from cd/dvd drive (with the vista disk in the drive) from the Boot Menu. F12 on most computers at the VERY FIRST Dell screen before windows loads.

Thanks for the reply!
I finally arrived at Windows Recovery Environment (via Dell's Vista reinstallation disc booting) and ran
Startup Repair (Failed: A recent driver installation or upgrade may be preventing the system from starting-Root Cause) and
System Restore (Failed: System Restore failed due to an unspecified error; The system cannot find the file specified (0x80070002)),
and even though the Vista OS is found, still no joy. I then went to command prompt and ran X:\sources>chkdsk C: /F /R...
Which did great till the very end, "Failed to transfer logged messages to the event log with status 50", and that is where I am currently stuck and in over my head... :emotion-43:
Any ideas, need joy
