Can I use a Windows XP disc from a Gateway computer with excel on it to download the excel program on my Dell?

You're talking apples and oranges.  Windows XP is an operating system.  Excel is an application program.  Excel is not part of Windows.

If Excel came on your Gateway as you imply, it belongs to that machine.  Therefore, it cannot be installed on another computer as it's OEM software.  Further, if it's Office 2002/XP or newer, it requires activation and has already been activated.

Mike,

When I bought my Dell with XP last year - and after checking on this Forum - I installed Excel from the disc of my old DELL computer - no problems with that - repeat old Dell machine.

Yes you can install it, HOWEVER, as it was pointed out this becomes a license issue for the computer in question.  What you are asking is inline with piracy issues and I would not suggest to anyone to by a piece of software and install on multiple machines, whether or not you are the original owner.  The license is granted to one machine and one machine only unless you have purchased a multiple user license.

The software has already been activated and may not operate on the new machne for which you want to install it.  If you have gotten rid of the old machine but still have the software, you should contact microsoft and see if a new key can be issued.
