Windows Explorer crashes when opening mpg or mp3 file

Whenever I open a folder that contains mp3 files or mpg files and I click on them to play them Windows Explorer crashes. Also, Windows MEdia Player will be unable to play mpg files (it crashes), but I can play them with other players like PowerDVD. Any idea how to fix this? Thanks.

I just got an ".mpg" file in an e-mail.  I get an error that it's invalid and nothing will open it.  I have WMP11.

Try upgrading to latest version of WMP. If you have the latest version, roll back to the previous version and then upgrade from there.

If that doesn't work, remove mp3 from the list of files that you want WMP to open.

I just found the fix and it works.I got it from another forum. It says:
"It is caused by the Windows thumbnail feature, which is a bit buggy. This will disable that function and solve the crashes:

Start > Run > regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll "
