Well I tried to run scannow and it would not work. Nothing would come up. No windows file protection box, nothing. Thanks for the suggestion though. Anymore?
I installed SP2 on a brand new Dell Dimension 8400. It seemed to go well. About 2 1/ 2 or 3 weeks later my computer froze and I had to use the tower button. When I turned it on Windows wouldn't start: File is missing or corrupt - C\Windows\system32\Config. I called Dell and we couldn't get into safe mode or anything else. She had me do a repair install. All of my programs, music etc. were retained BUT when I went to Windows Updates it didn't recognize that I needed the 17 updates I had installed prior to SP2. I downloaded and installed MS Baseline Analyzer, Belarc Advisor and qfecheck.exe to figure out what I needed. From Baseline I installed 19 updates!
Also, the new settings in IE that come from SP2 are still in IE and I still have the Security Center in my Control Panel. I have seen Error Events relating to SSDP Discovery Center, HTTP and fltmgr which I'm told all relate to SP2.
From my experience, a repair install does not remove ALL of SP2 (but it does remove SP2). Since then I get an explorer.exe error sometimes opening Control Panel from a limited account and the control panel closes. Also, occasionally on reboot the welcome screen is frozen - I don't know if this all is because of the repair install, but I wanted to mention it.
Agreed. A Repair Install comes with its own set of problems and shouldn't be the first line of attack when attempting to TS a problem.
Did you install SP2 and then later uninstall it ?
Did you do the most recent Windows update related to jpeg/gdi ?
When you ran sfc did you watch your tower 'activity light' for signs that it (sfc) was running ? I believe it can run in silent mode with no pop-ups/signs that it is actually running; not usual though. An AdAware scan would be the best place to start if you can use your system.

Is this since installing SP2? I assume so since this is the Service Pack forum.
You may want to try running the system file checker (sfc): http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html
It will replace any corrupted or missing file.

You may want to try a repair install of XP: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm
I suggest running a complete spyware check as well: http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm
