Windows file protection message

Once in a while I get the following msg.

Files that are required for windows to run properly have been replaced by unrecognized versions. To maintan system stability windows must restore the original version of these files.

Insert your windows XP professional CD-Rom now!

Need help to understand whats going on and what should do. If anything. All I have is the version that Dell provided me when I bought the system.

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like you have damaged or missing 'protected' files. Restart your computer and run the System File Checker by going to Start/Run and Entering this command:

sfc /scannow (note space before the "/")

Before you do this run an updated virus scan. When finished the SFC command go to windowsupdate.com and install all critical updates.

Thanks. I ran the sfc / file and here's the mesg back

"files that are required for windows to run properly must be copied to the DLL cache.

insert your windows XP professional CD-ROM".

I inserted the CD-rom but it does not tell you what to do. Does this mean I have to reload the entire OS? I did'nt do anything I pulled the CD-Rom out.

Go to a 'Command Prompt'. You'll find this by clicking on Start/All Programs/Accessories/Command Promt.

Type in sfc /scanonce (You'll get a message.)
Then type in exit and hit Enter.
Close all programs (if any are open) and restart the computer.

The scanonce command should run fixing your dllcache folder. When you get back to the desktop run this command from Start/Run (or Command Prompt):

sfc /scannow

Thanks Maxd. I did what you told me but after the system rebooted I received the same file protection msg. Not sure what to do next.

Insert your XP CD in the drive, allow the menu to appear, then click
"exit". Now run the SFC /SCANNOW command
