WINDOWS HOMESERVER V'S. WINDOWS SERVER 2003 SBE

HI THERE ALL.

I WAS JUST WONDERING WHAT OTHER PEOPLE THOUGHT ABOUT HOMESERVER V'S WIN 2K3 SBE.

I HAVE WIN 2K3 SBE INSTALLED ON MY HOME SERVER PC AND LOVE THE EXCHANGE SERVER FOR FAMILY EMAIL DISTRIBUTION AND SECURITY FEATURES BUT BACKING UP SEAMS TO BE A PAIN AS I KEEP FORGETTING TO SWAP TAPES (ONLY DAT4'S SO HAVE TO SPREAD BACKUP OVER LOTS OF TAPES).

WINDOWS HOMESERVER SEEMS TO HAVE GOOD BACKUP FEATURES, I CAN'T SEE ANYTHING IN HOMESERVER INFO ABOUT EMAIL SO I GUESS I WILL LOOSE ALL EXCHANGE FEATURES. CAN YOU GET EXCHANGE SERVER ON ITS OWN AND DO YOU THINK IT WILL RUN. (I THINK HOMESERVER IS JUST WIN2K3 UNDER THE FANCY CONSOLE?

ALSO I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN A BELIEVER THAT RAID IS BEST AND USING PERC WITH RAID 1 OR 5 FOR DATA SECURITY BUT MS SAY NOT TO USE RAID WITH HOMESERVER? WHAT'S THAT ABOUT, IN A WORK SERVER I DON'T THINK ANY ADMIN WOULD EVEN CONSIDER DEPLOYING SERVER WITHOUT SAFETY NET OF RAID.

ANY THOUGHTS PLEASE.

REGARDS

I can't answer all your questions, so I'll just touch on what I know.

RAID 1 and 5 don't ensure your safety so much as they ensure up-time.  Backups to an external or seperate hard drive are still preferred even if you have an array setup.  Multiple drives in your array can fail.  The RAID controller can fail.  Your data can be destroyed or corrupted at the OS level, where mirroring won't help.  I am unsure why or if Home Server would limit your ability to use RAID.

If you want to drop the money on it, Acronis True Image E. Server along with workstation editions on the client computers will help you automate backups for all machines on the network.  Home server is noticably cheaper than this, but I have a feeling it lacks the features.

In answer to your Exchange question.  Yes, you can run Exchange on a seperate machine.  This is typically best practice, but SBServer sacrifices such practices for monetary savings and simplicity.  Exchange by itself is also a pricey investment.  I am unsure if you can run SBS and Home on the same network or not -- SBS requires that it be the domain controller (not sure if Home has similar requiremetns or not).

If you're only looking at Home server for its backup features, then I think you're losing a lot.  I would look at other commercial backup software (even if it's something that ends up being cheaper than Acronis's).

thanx for that reply.

you are correct about 2k3 an homeserver not working together as the connection utility fails to connect to homeserver, also issues with router, i think its DNS problems as can't ping "homeserver computer name" but can ping "homeserver ip address".

i have symantec backupexec ver 9, i think this has network backup features?
