Read the information found below for disabling fast shutdown:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;187607

On the chance that fast shutdown is ALREADY disabled, reverse the process to enable it.  I've found that either setting can work better on a given machine running different programs.

Peter,

While I agree with the previous two posters that there are Troubleshooters for the notorious Win98 Shutdown Problem, I'd like to add that you should give your computer approximately eight minutes to complete the shutdown process, before you press your power button.

During the past five years, I have read many of the technical tips and solutions and decided that they involved far too much expertise for the novice user. I even tried a few. About the only thing that made much sense to me was a Microsoft note somewhere that said something about "mapped drivers need some time". When I read that, I began to give my computer more than the usual 2 minutes. Eventually I discovered that somewhere around 8 minutes, my computer would shut down. I also discovered that often, if I tried to shutdown my system quickly after being online, it would hang. It seems that either the RNAAP file, or Norton's antivirus software, causes a great delay. Consequently, I recommend that you slow down your shutdown procedure by waiting several seconds before moving from one step to another...or, in other words, do not expect the computer to shutdown if you click Start (zip), Shutdown (zip) and Shutdown (zip) in a time-span of 5-6 seconds.

g'day mate,

I believe that Disable the Fast Shutdown disappeared from the MSCongfig General|Advanced tab when Microsoft introduced the Fast Shutdown patch. That patch was contained in one of the critical downloads introduced over two years ago. It was supposed to correct the shutdown problem yet the problem still persists.

Thanks to all for your responses. I paused (tried several different lengths) between Start and Shutdown and Shutdown, and then waited a long while (30 minutes) but the "Windows is closing" screen remained. Then, I went to MSCONFIG>General>Advanced, and there did not find an option to "Disable fast shutdown". The only "disable" options in that menu are Disable System ROM Breakpoint, Disable Virtual HD IRQ, Disable Scandisk after bad shutdown, and Disable UDF file system. The only "enable" options are Enable startup menu and Enable Pentium FO workaround. I will continue with the suggestions at ahuma.org, but in the meantime I hope someone will know why "Disable fast shutdown" is not in this menu, and how I can get it back. Thanks again. Peter
