Windows ME and Windows XP

I have a Dell Dimension 4300 that has WindowsME on it, and  I want to upgrade it to Windows XP.   I don't know how to do this.  The Dimension is not online.  I tried to install the XP but it said I needed to upgrade my Windows that I have on it.  So I think that I first need to get the Dimension online and then upgrade the Windows that I have, and then install my Windows XP.  I have a wireless modem on my laptop.  What kind of modem do I have in the Dell?  External or internal?  How do I go about doing all this?

I typed in Dimension 4300 with ME on it on the drivers download and came up with this link that says prep tools for Windows Xp http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/type.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&SystemID=DIM_PNT_P4_4300&os=WME&osl=en&deviceid=2386&libid=25
click on it and see if that is what you are needing

Thanks a bunch.  I'll let you know how it's going.  I'm fairly new to this cool stuff, having first gone on line this September, so I've got a lot to learn.

Kassoline, click here for Denny Denham's web site and the information he has posted on installing Windows XP on a Dell system.   The web site will explain each step along with additional links to other useful web sites.

I believe that I have enough processor to support XP migration.  Any suggestions of what should I upgrade before I migrate to XP?  I'm going to back up my files and do a wipe and clean installation.

Your specs are fine the way they are.  However, I would suggest you not "upgrade" but rather wipe the disc (format) and put a fresh install of XP on that drive and get rid of all the ME registry entries.

All you will need is a copy of the XP Upgrade disc since you already have the Windows ME disc.  The upgrade install will ask for that ME disc as a qualigying source.
