Windows Media Center - Windows 7 Professional

Have been successfully using Windows Media Center to watch tv via a usb Freeview tv tuner for over a year.

Suddenly I keep getting a notification that the Mhegaddin program has stopped working. Investigation on the web informs me that this is an add in to do with Mheg-5 (text) support.

WHY am I getting this message all of a sudden and how do I stop / disable the add in ???

A google search turns up two things.  This is a compatibility problem in the Beta version of Windows 7 and Windows Media Player.   Also, it seems to be a compatility problem between this program and later versions of Windows Media Player.

From your post, I assume you are still using the Win 7 beta version, which should have expired. If this is the case, you are going to have to install the RTM version of Win 7, but that may still not fix the compatibility problem of this program.

Have you tried uninstalling the program and/or the Mheg-5 text support program?   HERE is a link to a discussion about this on the Windows 7 forum.

Fireberd

Thanks for responding. To answer your comments.

1) I have a Dell XPS M2010, originally with Vista, but reinstalled with Windows 7 32 bit Professional purchased  from dell as a complete install cd in Sept 2009. Windows Media Center has been used daily since this date, until the mhegaddin problem started appearing a few days ago - and keeps coming up.

2) The link to the Windows 7 forum you kindly provided I had already found and studied in my first investigations.

3) Apparently the Mheg-5 text support  (mhegaddin) can be disabled, but again my investigations on the web have not been able to reveal how to exactly do this in the Windows 7 version of Windows Media Center.

4) No, I haven't tried uninstalling / reinstalling. To be honest I had such horrendous problems installing Windows 7 such that my Dell inbuilt bluetooth keyboard & mouse still worked, that I am afraid to do any uninstalling in case I hit the massive problems I had again. (This has been the subject of a very long thread elsewhere in these Forums - we did achieve success in the end - at least on 32 bit platforms)

You can manually set a System Restore point before you do anything.  That way if something does mess up you can restore the PC back to how it was prior to changing/uninstalling/installing, etc.

To manuall set a System Restore Point, go to Control Panel/System and Security/System.  On the left side of the Panel click on System Protection.  When the Panel comes up click on the Create button at the bottom of the panel to manually set a System Restore point.

wgt40w,

I want to tell you I am also a M2010 owner. I have successifully upgraded to Win 7 x64 thanks to the work you, crc2, and others did on the other forums you mentioned. I realize that you stayed with x32 by your choice. Wanted to take this opportuinty to thank you for all the work you did in the process. Crc2 and I have since helped another upgrade to x64 since.

That said, based on the processes you and crc2 wrote, I don't feel you would have any trouble doing a reinstall if you thought it would cure your problem with WM. I can't address your issue as I don't use it but wanted to tell you I feel you could do a reinstall ok. Have never figured out the ACPI yet with x64.

Thanks again for all your hard work and good luck with your problem.

Dave,

Many thanks for your kind comments. Out of interest I didn't upgrade to Win 7 x64 as at the time i was told that whilst my M2010 officially passed the x64 suitability test, in reality x64 was not recommended. For my useage x32 suits me.

As regards Windows Media Center Mhegaddin - the problem seems to have been sorted (hopefully). I went through all the menu options unticking everything - rebooted and then ticked all on again!

BUT here is a separate Win 7 grumble.    Windows 7 has a useful Volume Mixer - but when activated mine opens up with only some of the volume sliders visible - I have to manually 'drag' the window to see all of them. Does anyone know how to get this to open 'maximised normal' ? (there is NO maximise button in the window)

wgt40w,

I looked at my mixer, after clicking the vol. icon, and I get 2 items. Device speakers and application system sounds. I can stretch it out and the rest is empty. I do not have external speakers, so no 5.1 or 7-1 setup. Don't know if this makes any difference or not. I checked device mgr and the audio controls and says all is up to date. Don't know if being on x64 makes any difference.

Am going to email the guy I mentioned above that we upgraded because He is heavy into music and see what he has or knows. I'd give you the email add. but you know what would happen. I'll let you know.

You probably have already figured this out but if you right click the volume icon, you can open the whole mixer. I also found that if you right click the top of the bar with the mixer open, it has a maximize box but it's greyed out!

Yes Dave - you are correct - they are all hooked up at the moment. In more normal use the 2 usb players would not be connected. But as one has to wait some time whilst recorded audio is converted to Mp3, I watch and listen to tv whilst simutaneously listening / editing (at a different volume level) the recorded audio. Once I have finished my record old vinyls + cassettes project, various things will be disconnected and the problem will go away as I will then only ever need to adjust the 'master' volume level.

I don't know about you - but in my case every time I come across even a temporary 'dissatifaction' with something in Windows - something I can't believe someone hasn't considered would be a problem / nuisance - I just want to try and see if there is a solution !!

Dave,

Thanks for the efforts you are making. In my case I am currently in the process of recording all my old vinyl records onto my pc / converting to Mp3. So when I open Volume Mixer I have  sliders for each of the following:-

Device Speakers

Applications Systems Sounds

Windows Media Center (using for tv)

Windows Desktop Gadgets ( have gadgets linked to internet radio stations)

Usb record player

Usb cassette player

Line in Microphone (used for Skype calls)

Pop Peeper (Freeware email server viewer)

wgt40w,

That's quite a list. Am I safe to assume you have these externals hooked up and that's why they show? I just sent Heath ((hejinc) handle, an email and asked him about this. I also attached this thread to the email so maybe he can help. We'll see if he emails me or posts at some point.

You helped me and I will try to return the favor.

Dave
