Windows Media Player - CODEC problem
Hi - hope someone can help with this "minor" problem. I have 8600 Inspiron w/Windows Media 10 and all updates. I am trying to run a video CD. As the CD is loading it shows in the statis bar, "
Error in loading codec." I have selected "all files" in the windows media player and selected "all files" in FILE TYPES. The file name is "
start.avi"
I only hear the AUDIO portion of the CD and see only the "sound graphics" in the video screen (Wow! Really cool, man!) I sure would appreciate some help seeing other than "syadellic" (sp?) tie- dye pictures. I need this CD for educational purposes with my business. I'd like to try my best before having to return it for refund if I can't get it to run.
I have also tried the CD on my 8250 P4 running WinXP-SP2 Home Edition - same thing, same problem.
Thanks and Merry Christmas, ya'll!

Look here first. Control panel » folder options » file types and look down the list for AVI and see what program is used to open it. If it is WMP, then here is the MS site for codecs for the WMP versions listed:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/format/codecdownload.aspx
If that doesn't resolve it, you can do a google for "codec". Also you could try to go back to WMP9 and see if it is related to WMP 10, available here:

Ok, I have tried everything that you suggested and it still dont work. I have even tried other computers with all the same win media player 10's, and also one computer that has media player 9, and all do the same thing. 5 out of 5 do not work. So I am sending the cd's back. Thank you so much for your support.

Mary, we have tried DVD players in our home entertainment systmes, the dvd/rw/r in our computer, and also 5 different other computers. It just does not play. The windows media player comes up, but instead of seeing the video, all I see is crazy looking type screen saver on the media player.
Also your link that you provided, clearly states on it that Windows Media Player will play the cd along with other free players on the list.
So thank you for replying, but I am going to send them back. There are of no use like this.

You can download the small utility sherlock codec detector. It will tell you what codecs you have and if they are OK:
