I am helping a freind with his puter. The Windows Media Player is not working corrretly.I think the problem started when another program was deleted. The first message said i needed a decoder so I downloaded the Vista codec package. That messaged was resolved but now when I try to plaay a dvd it says to change the resolution.Did that and still no luck. The os is Vista sp1.Next thing I tried was to uninstall. When I tried that it says I need permission. I am on as the admin so what gives??? Thanks

Hi Trafficflow. :smileyhappy: I have a few questions for you before I suggest anything.

1) What version of Vista is on that computer? (Basic, Home Premium, Business, Ultimate)

2) Has Media Player been updated to the most recent version (11.0.6001.7000)?

3) What display adapter is being used? And what resolution are you trying to use?

4) What did you try to uninstall, Media Player or SP1?

5) What happens now after you've changed the resolution, does the DVD just not play? Does this happen on all DVDs? Do CDs play correctly?

Was able to fix by by doing a restore of a file that is shared with the media player.Acer has there backups on a seperate drive. Thanks for the help anyway. Trafficflow

Thanks for the update, Trafficflow. I'm glad to hear that it's working again. I'm also curious about that file you mentioned because I've never seen WMP have a resolution error before. Can you tell us what the file was and what it was being shared with? Also you said that Acer keeps their backups on a separate drive. Are you saying that it is on a totally different hard drive as opposed to just being on a separate partition on the same hard drive?

The issue with the wmp was a new one to me also. I recently purchased  3 acer computers so I am just learning them and it is my first vista also. The acer has a partition that has the restore files on it. Sorry. The acer that had the problem was a older one that had some corrupt/virus that centered around music players. The files for acer arcade had display files that were deleted and had to be put back on then reload wmp.
