Boot to your XP disk and do a repair.

Unfortunately, I do not have any of my Operating System  CD's.  They are coming in 3-5 days, but I am trying anything I can think of because this is killing my work production...

Welcome to the forums :emotion-21:

What model system/laptop do you have?

Whatever it is... boot from the OS disc, and try a 'Repair' :emotion-55:

[edit]  Dunno why I didn't see Mary's reply, before I replied... with exactly the same advice?

Sorry :emotion-43:

Anyway... there's not much you can do until you receive the OS disc :emotion-6:  [/edit]

I have tried last known good, but same thing....The Windows login screen comes up and the bar at bottom begins to scroll, but then the bar slows to a crawl and will not bring up windows.  I haven't changed or added any hardware.  The only software was switching from Trend to McAfee...

Like everybody else stated, your best bet would be to hang tight until you recieve your OS media. Then, boot to the CD and do a repair. Don't make the common mistake of pressing the 'R' key when it prompts you during the initial OS Disc boot phase (This will place you in Recovery Console). Wait until you select the OS partition and then instead of an install, choose to repair. Otherwise you will get stuck in recovery console and from there you wont be able to do too much to fix your issue. I also noticed that you did not post whether or not you have tried using 'Last known good configuration'. Did you make any recent hardware or software (mainly driver) changes before the OS became unbootable? You said that you tried booting to Safe Mode with no success. This would have disabled any services or startup items that are not absolutely necessary to run windows but will not roll back any registry entries that might be causing the system to hang at boot, so 'known good' might be worth a shot until you recieve your media due to the fact that it actually will restore your registry to a previous point in time before it may have become corrupt . Let me know how that works out for you. If known good does allow you to boot into windows, make note of what changes were made to the system before the boot issue occured and see what you can resolve from that.

Svchost.exe checks the services part of the registry to build a list of services that it has to load at startup. If that file becomes corrupt, misplaced,  or damaged then your system wont be able to load any of the critical microsoft services that are required in order for your system to load windows properly, thus causing a BSOD or just a hang during boot. Since it sounds like this is more than likely what is causing your issue, you are going to have to just wait for your OS media and perform a repair installation. Wish I could be of more help.

This helps a bunch, helps keep me from beating my head against the wall until the disks arrive.  I greatly appreciate it...

LoL. Been there and done that. I still beat my head against the wall on occassion. Sometimes there is nothing that you can do except wait. Good news is that it is an issue that wont cause data loss due to an operating system re-install. If you need any further assistance, just post it up here. I periodically check on threads that I post on, so I'll catch it soon enough.

Did you try "last known good" on the F8 menu, instead of Safe Mode? If that works, shut down normally and reboot normally, and you'll be good.

Reboot and press F12 before Windows starts to load. Go to Utilities partition and run Extended hard drive tests. When it's done, reboot and if you're lucky...
