I'd be
very surprised if an NT modem driver worked correctly with Win98. Did you check the modem manufacturer's Web site, or Dell Product Support/Downloads if the modem shipped with the system from Dell?
JimW, thank you for replying. I called Dell technician and he helped me uninstall my Windows 98 and reinstall Windows 98 with my back up CD that came with the computer. He asked if Dell had sent me a backup CD for the modem driver for Windows 98. I told him all the backup CDs Dell sent: 56K 3Com US Robotics; Dell Dimension Resource ; WinDVD; and UltraScan P780.
The Dell technician looked for a Windows 98 modem driver but was unable to find one so he installed a NT modem driver instead. He said there wasn't much difference between the two. He was able to install it into my computer from India as I remember or he could have Emailed the download. I don't know what it is or anything about it. I guess I could look and see if it is listed in System Properties on the Control Panel but I don't know what to look for. Under Modem, 56K 3Com Robotics is listed.
I originally had Turtle Beach Montego II A3D 320V Sound Card before we had to uninstall Windows 98. The Dell technician sent me an Email with a download for Turtle Beach Montego II. I'm not sure what it does, but I downloaded it.
Would I be able to tell what kind of modem it is from System Properties and what would I look for. Thank you.
It may be that the file wasn't really a driver, but an "inf" file describing the particular modem. In that case, the file shouldn't cause any problems. Does the modem work correctly?
If it had actually been a driver, I'd be concerned as well. But if the modem is working correctly, what was probably installed was an "information" (.inf) file containing the commands and parameters for the modem. Since both Win98 and NT support the "unimodem" driver, there's no special driver code needed. But there is special data needed for the modem, and, based on your observation that the modem works, that's all that was needed.
As a result, you need not be concerned about checking for Windows NT updates for your machine.
I suppose the modem is working correctly. I was just concerned because the technician had to substitute it for the backup Win98 modem driver I didn't have/wasn't sent and he didn't have one either.
