windows product key doesn't work

Question

Hi, I've got windows 8(or 8.1 I'm not quite sure) product key from Dell support after they've changed my mother board and reinstalled windows. Now I want to reinstall my windows before upgrading them to windows 10, and I'm not quite sure which windows should I download for that product key? is it windows 8 or windows 8.1? And which version of windows? e.g. 8.1? 8.1N? 8.1 Pro? etc. I'm really confused about it, can you give me any pointers for this please?

I've tried several versions of windows and it says everywhere the same

Hi, I believe the software key isn't working as you are not using the OEM copy of Windows. What was the OS shipped with the machine from the factory? Try installing the same version. Thanks

I'd advise using the Insider 10130 .iso as an upgrade path for Windows 10:
