Did you manage to get this solved? as I now have this on 2 brand new XPS 8300 and getting really annoyed.... The OS is windows 7 ultimate, I have other PCs on the network and they're fine (Vista business, Xp pro, Windows 7 Home). I have stripped the desktop back to OS as per the boot disc and still no joy!!!
Can anyone else help? if not solved today I'll be returning the desktops back to Dell as this is stupid......
Problem: When you try to use Windows Update or update Windows Defender to check for and install updates, you receive one of the following error messages:
1. Click the "Start" Button, click "All programs", and click "Accessories".
2. Right-click “Command Prompt” Run as administrator". If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
3. Type "netsh winhttp reset proxy" (without quotes) at the command prompt, and press Enter.

Problem: When you try to use Windows Update or update Windows Defender to check for and install updates, you receive one of the following error messages:
Windows Defender error code 0x80072efd
Windows Update error code 80072efd
The following solution worked for me on a PC running Vista SP1. This was after all of the other suggestions provided by Microsoft Support at support.microsoft.com/.../836941 and support.microsoft.com/.../971058 did not work.
Solution (Vista SP 1):
4. Try the update again.
