Windows update doesn't show SP2
Dell Dimension 8300, Pentium 4 2.8 GHz, 1 GB Memory, 16X DVD-Rom Drive and 4XDVD+R/RW CD-RW Combination Drive. OS - Windows XP SP1, 64 MB DDR Nvidia GeForce4 MX 420 with TV out, 18" Flat Panel monitor
For quite some time (at least 2-3 months) when I went to the Windows Update page to download the latest critical updates, the SP2 was always listed there for me to download. ( I haven't done so yet as my computer is working so well and I am extremely meticulous about keeping it clean and I hear and read about the horrors of the SP2 upgrades going bad. A Dell tech even told me over the phone that Dell was not recommending it at this time.)
Lately when I have gone to the update page, the SP2 is not listed as available for download and I was wondering why. Other critical updates continue to be listed. I also have the upgrade CD. I read in one Dell forum message that "MS has a disable feature for 8 months from August 16 ('til Apr15?). It won't show in auto or manual updates for that period." Why is that?
Also, I am wondering why some of the fixes that were available for me and I have downloaded are listed in Add/Remove Programs as Windows XP Hotfix (SP2) e.g. "Windows XP Hotfix (SP2) Q328310". It appears they are fixes for SP2 when I have SP1. Anyone have an explanation? Thanks

You're not alone.

The SP2 cd you have is not going to change and your system is only get degraded as time goes by. My point is if you're going to add SP2 now is probably the best time. There are some definitive things you should do to prepare your system for the install. Having the SP2 cd (or the downloaded file) is one of the most important. If you're unsure of how best to prepare let me know and I'll tell you what I did. Even with SP2 an the subsequent updates there are still vulnerabilities especially in IE which are relevant even if you don't use IE.
The specific hotfix, (and presumably all the ones with the XP designation), is one of the hotfixes included in SP2 (not for SP2). You may want to uninstall it, or not, prior to installing SP2.
My suggestion is to backup your important stuff to cdrs (copy those files to another partition, hard drive or computer) and install SP2. I would install this update immediately in any case.

I ran the msinfo32 to find out if I have that processor and my processor lists as "x86 family 15 model 2 Stepping 7 Genuine Intel ~2793 mhs"
The faulty processor in question was supposed to say "x86 family 15 model 3 stepping 3"
I was not offered that update listed (885626) for this processor on my Windows Update page. As I said before, I guess I will contact Dell and see if I need a BIOS update.
