Windows Update Error 8000FFFF
I recently had a system exchange and they sent me a system with Vista on it. This is my second experience with this OS so I am not completely familure with alot of its features. I am a SA and have decent knowledge in XP and with all that I can't solve this problem. I've googled it and found no resolution that soved my problem. Microsoft technet was no help either.
Problem:
When I open Windoes Update and select Check for Updates it "appears" to be searching for about 2 minutes before returning with an error:
Error(s) Found
Code 8000FFF
That is all it says. I am COMPLETELY open to any ideas anyone has. Below is my setup details.
Inspiron E1505
Intel Core 2 Duo T5600
1021MB RAM
Windows Vista Home Premium Version 6.0.6000 Build 6000
ATI Mobility Radeon X1400
Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG
I performed a PC restore by selecting F8 and restoring the Dell Factory Image and the problem still exsists. Problem is present Wired or Wireless. I have a second Vista system Personal Built with Ultimate on it. It has no problems with windows update.
Please Help, Any Ideas will be performed and greatly appreciated. The system is a Factory Blank so no personal info/programs are yet installed. I'm willing to try anything!
Thank you,
Randy

Trying to fix error 8000FFF, I deleted the three values in HKLM\COMPONENTS, as suggested by Bill B:
PendingXmldentifier
NextQueueEntryIndex
AdvancedInstallersNeedResolving
I now get error 80073712, under the message "Windows could not search for new updates".
Googling suggests this may be resolved by deleting/renaming the pending.xml file in winsxs but I am a little anxious about the possibility of this generating other problems.
I backed up the Components key by exporting before deleting the three values, but I'm unsure how to restore these if I need to.
Any help greatly appreciated.

I should know to check here first before wasting my time on the Micro$oft sites. :smileyhappy:
The steps above fix the problem, and allowed Windows Update to update itself, which brought me to the 80073712 error. This can be fixed by deleting (re-naming/moving) pending.xml at c:\windows\winsxs. It took some doing to get the permissions worked out, and still wouldn't let me rename, but did let me move it to the desktop, then delete.
Vista is now downloading 43 critical updates building up since July 2007 on my friends laptop.

Bill,
In an older comment you suggest to go to command prompt and type "fsutil resource autoreset true c:\", when I tried to do that; the system replied that I need to have administrator privileges, I am sign on as admin, how could I resolve this problem?
Thanks for all the help

Removed the hotfix for KB929777 and restarted. Installed the manually downloaded KB929777 update and then installed. Restarted again. Checked control panel. update KB929777 now reflected. The key is to remove the hotfix and then do the manual install as stated.
what is the update that failed? is it the one above? this is what i did, got it of technet

i know this is drastic action to take. but when i have a problem i cant fix and has been going for a while. i will usually have all my files backed up to ext. hdd. and then do a reinstall of vista- obviously i dont do this everytime i have a problem cos it will take over 2hrs for just vista install. im not quiet sure why adobe was affected. it shouldnt have been and im not sure why you cant download.
i have noticed on my dell XPS that when i close skype completely the desktop will dissapear. i will hit cntrl alt and del. and it comes up with the folder where my bluetooth exchange folder is. ( thats when i type in explorer.exe ) - to load up the start menu and icons for the desktop. weird huh.
the other thing you might be able to try is if you speak to dell technical support some one might do a remote connect to ur machine and try to solve the issue them selves but im not sure if they will.
i really do hope you get your problem fixed. if you can let me kno what the error was for i might be able to help further. just a couple of questions;
1) do you know what error code was for. was it a failed update?
2) have you tried a system restore? to restore the adobe that was uninstalled.
3) have any new errors come up?
cheers alan
