Windows Update Failures and Update Package Installation Failures

Hi Everyone,

I have a new Precision 1650 and I have been trying to install Microsoft updates KB971033 as well as the IE 10 update and they both constantly fail.  When I installed KB971033 manually my PC blue screened and then restarted and uninstalled the update.  How do I get these updates to install or are they even necessary?  I ran CheckSUR and the log shows the output below.  How can I fix these corruption issues and is this the reason that I cannot install those updates?  Even running the MIcrosoft FixIT tool will attempt to repair the issue but when the PC reboots and the installation process begins it says it fails and reverts back to before the repair.  This whole issue stemmed from trying to install iTunes 11 on this new PC and getting the error:

"An error occurred during the installation of assembly'Microsoft.VC80.CRT.type="win32", version="8.0.50727.6195",publickeytoken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b", processorArchitecture="x86".  Please refer to Help and Support for more info. HResult:0x80073712.

I know this is the Microsoft forum so I do not expect an answer on the iTunes issue but if anyone has a solution or has seen it before any help would be appreciated.  Thank you all for all your help!

nfullington,

system image, recovery puts the computer back to factory, all files and folder will be lost. Backup files and folders before using this option.

system restore, uses a system restore point, usually created by starting the computer in Windows 7 or during a Windows update. I would go back before Tuedays updates.

Windows Updates fail to install

Thank you for your help but unfortunately that fix did not work.  I tried installing the updates via windows update and received the following errors: Code 80070BC9 and Code 9C57.  I also tried installing it manually and when the computer restarted it got to 35% of installing the update before it failed and restarted.  On that restart it blue screened and the error I saw at the top of the blue screen said bad_pool_header.   It then restarted again, reverted back to before the changes and windows started back up.

nfullington,

There was an update for Windows 7 that was causing problems.

Consider using system restore and go to the first restore point before April 9th, 2013

A blank screen for 5 minutes when using system restore is normal, so don't be alarmed.

After using system restore, try using Windows Updates and see if everything works.

Restoring Your Computer´s Software to the Factory Settings

The closest restore point I have is April 10th unfortunately. Most likely because of all my attempts to fix the issue.  In all honesty I wish I could just revert back to factory settings because I don't care about losing what is on the machine but there is not restore point back to factory settings.  I am thinking the only way to get this back is to do a repair with the Windows disk but I can't seem to find how to order the media from Dell.

There is no option to reset to Dell Factory image on the screen.  However, I can see the recovery partition in the system tools.  Is there a way to run the recovery via the command prompt? Do I have to assign the recovery partition to a drive to do so?

nfullington,

When you tapped F8, did you see repair my computer?

Do you have the factory disks?

I don't have the recovery disks and yes I can see repair my computer but the only options I have after clicking next, after confirming my  input language, are startup repair, system restore, system image recovery, windows memory diagnostic, and command prompt.

Thank you for your help! I am going to go ahead and mark this as answered and will try the restore when I get a chance this week.  Thank you again for your help!

Sorry meant upgrade not update.

April 17th, 2013 11:00

I was able to find the Windows 7 disk and did an update.  Once the update completed I was able to successfully install all the updates including the two that wouldn't originally as well as install iTunes.  Thank you for your post as well as all the help Rick gave me.

Start from square one!  If this is not serious now, it can be.  Windows update does really work, and if you are banging your head against the wall trying to do the "old fashioned" update methods (been thru this... weeks of grief), If you can, I know just enough to be really dangerous - everyone is right, just start from scratch if your pc is pretty new, or use system restore and go back as far as you can.  After a restore is successful, windows update will automatically (if set right) give you the updates incl. drivers you really need, be careful doing these updates manually, esp. driver updates, you can really mess up your computer, if it ain't broke, leave well enough alone (just my experience, sounds like you're doing more work than you need to do).  Win 7 is really good this way.  System restore has come a long way, whatever you do, back up as often as possible, on a flash or extra hard drive.  If you have been around as long as I have, amazing things can happen if you trust the new software environment (ie win 7), it really does a lot of things that used to be so tedious for you, but you have to go back as far as possible and then just let it do it's thing!  Hope that helps, no one wants to deal with error codes if unnecessary!  And "fix it" really can't do that much.  Only other tip is, read, read, read and don't try to be a tech if you don't need to (been there to).  Good luck!

Also, if you do want to go back to factory settings, I'm pretty sure there is an option for that somewhere in Dell support, look for it.  I ran across it today, so it could be your best bet, we have all done it at some point!  I don't think you need the Dell disks, should be an option.  Look around or just call the hotline.
