Windows update not working

Hello

I have an Inspiron 1720 laptop running Windows Vista with recently installed Service Pack 1.  When I try to use Windows update it loads from the Program list and tells me there are updates for my computer but when I click on 'Download updates' it hangs and then stops responding so I have to go to Task Manager to end task to free up my computer.

If I select Windows Update from Control Panel it stops responding immediately without giving any info about available updates.

If anyone else has experienced this problem I would appreciate advice.

Thanks. David

Try this

In Safe mode navigate to your C:\Windows  folder, look for a folder called "SoftwareDistribution" right click on it and select rename, rename it to    SoftwareDistribution.old     hit enter.

Restart the PC and try Windows updates again. This usually solves WUP problems in Vista.

Thanks.  Sorry I have been away so only just had the chance to try this.  I followed your instructions and after renaming the file and restarting Windows update ran as far as checking what updates were available.  I clicked on 'Download' and it appeared to start then it hung.  When I tried to 'Stop Download' it locked up and now the symptoms described in my original message have returned.
