Try this, forget the icon about windows updates are ready and click on start, all programs, and windows update. Don't do the express but use the selective and see what updates MS finds and then do them from there.

Thanks, Rebel 9. You provided some valuable information. I followed your link and updated the issue manually (although I did have to try it several times, as it stalled repeatedly). Restarted my computer and was immediately prompted that there were updates to install. So, I went ahead and clicked on the updates icon in my taskbar. It disappeared completely!

Thanks so much!

However, tell me how I am to explain this to my 83-year-old mother who lives 1,800 miles away who depends on my expertise over the phone? I had set up her system to do everything automatically (updates, virus detection, etc.) -- so this is a real problem for the generation that has jumped into technology with a jaundiced eye. Now this is a real shot in the foot. I know this because my Mom already called me about this two days ago sounding very distressed that there was "an unusual icon" in her taskbar (I had set up her updates to install automatically).

Hmm. Sure, we of the technologically savvy generation can figure it out, but, pardon as I rant -- makes me wonder if my daughter has it right: she has switched to the other side .. Mac.

Oh well. Thanks for your help. At least now I'm on the straight path. I'll be on the phone with my Mom for well over an hour guiding her about this issue this weekend, for sure! I do so appreciate your solution :)
