Windows Update Requesting Administrator rights

When I select the Windows Update, I receive the following message back after it attempts to look for available updates:

Error number:  0x8DDD0002

"To install items from Windows Update, you must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group.  If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings might also prevent you from completing this procedure."

I am the only user of my stand-alone PC and my login setup indicates that I have Administrator capability.  Have not had any previous issues getting Windows updates up to this point.  Does anyone know how to correct this problem?

I had exactly the same issue about 6 weeks ago.  I hope my experience with this issue is helpful to you.

I contacted Microsoft and the Technician had me change some registry key values.  Since this did not work for me, I did not keep my written notes on the procedure.  The conclusion was that I had a corrupt registry.  I agreed since I had some Norton Anti-virus 2004 problems with Live Update and according to Symantec I had a corrupt registry.  It took less than a year for my Dimension 8300 windows registry to go belly up.

Now it is possible for issues that are alike may be caused by different problems.  You may need some permission registry key values changed and that may solve your problem.  In my case it did not.  I  can't help you with this, but some other forum member or Microsoft may be able to help you.

Ultimately, I backed up my system and did a clean install of  Windows XP.  This solved my corrupt registry problem and sped up my system a great deal by cleaning out old registry junk.

You may want to read my post just below yours entilled "Upgrade SP2?"  This whole experience made me a little wary of XP2.  But now I am not.  I will be upgrading soon.

Thanks - I was afraid of that, was hoping to avoid having to mess with the registry.  Appreciate your reply.
